The shale revolution, low prices, the rise of alternative energy and the ever-increasing urgency of climate change initiatives have placed the state’s energy industry at a historic crossroads. Al Lewis is business editor of the Houston Chronicle, leading a team of journalists covering business, energy, economics and finance in one of America’s largest and most fascinating metropolitan areas. He has been a columnist for The Wall Street Journal Sunday, MarketWatch, Dow Jones Newswires and the Denver Post. He also formerly served as business editor of The Denver Post and editor-in-chief of the South Florida Business Journal.
Panelists
Laura Blewitt is a reporter on Bloomberg’s Oil Trading Americas team. She previously managed Americas LPG coverage for Argus Media and worked in operations and trading for BioUrja Trading. Laura holds a BS in Journalism with a minor in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin.
Collin Eaton is an energy reporter at the Houston Chronicle. He has covered the legal aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the oil market collapse and its consequences for the Houston companies that extract oil and natural gas from the earth. He also covers energy finance, OPEC and cybersecurity (learn more about it from here). He previously wrote about banking and finance for the Houston Business Journal and worked as an intern for the Chronicle of Higher Education, The Dallas Morning News and the Austin American-Statesman.

Ryan Maye Handy is an energy reporter at the Houston Chronicle. She covers the Railroad Commission of Texas, the state’s oil and gas regulator, the Public Utility Commission of Texas and power. She came to Texas from Colorado, where she worked for five years as reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette and the Fort Collins Coloradoan. While at The Gazette, she was the paper’s natural disaster reporter, and covered two major wildfires and their aftermath, multiple summers of deadly flash flooding and a massive landslide.
Nushin Huq is the Houston correspondent for Bloomberg BNA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bloomberg LP.  Nushin reports on legislative, legal and regulatory BBNA topics in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, which include energy and the environment. Prior to BBNA, Nushin worked as a market reporter covering electricity and the oil/oil products financial markets. She has an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a masters degree from Medill.
Jonathan Garrett is an analyst for energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, studying the regions where U.S. oil companies drill since 2011, including the Rocky Mountains, the Northeastern United States and the Bakken Shale in North Dakota. Garrett has worked for the world’s largest oil field service company, Schlumberger, as an engineer. He earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2007.

Panelists

Jamie Stockwell is managing editor of the San Antonio Express-News. She oversees the newsroom’s daily operations for print, digital and mobile audiences. Her focus is on digital innovation and enhancing storytelling online with data visualization, interactive mapping and other immersive tools. Her career began at The Washington Post, where she wrote about criminal justice.  

Rachael Gleason, Data journalist/web producer, HoustonChronicle.com, is a Texas-born, New Jersey-raised and Michigan-educated lover of maps, coffee, yoga, good books and nerdy day trips. She got her start as a strait-laced reporter covering community news, hurricanes and executions in East Teas. She later called on computer-assisted reporting skills to produce thoughtful reporting on Great Lakes and West Texas environmental issues and digital interactives for the San Antonio Express-News. She currently focuses on projects and training staff on digital tools at HoustonChronicle.com
